E-news for Week ending 17 April 2009

Welcome to Disabled Peoples International's (DPI's) E-news. Please continue to send your activities, conference information, and publications news to Dr. Cassandra Phillips at info@dpi.org. This week the primary focus is on women with disabilities.

New Resource on HIV/AIDS

During the past decade international organizations, civil society groups and governments worldwide have intensified their efforts to describe the intersections between HIV and violence against women (VAW). Due to methodological limitations, information is limited regarding the ways in which both areas interconnect in their causes, outcomes and social responses. Having said this, however, evidence is sufficient to justify an integrated approach to HIV and VAW in both policy and practice in different countries.

As a contribution to this work, Development Connections (DVCN) and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) have collaborated to produce A Manual for Integrating the Programmes and Services of HIV and Violence Against Women. It can be downloaded free of charge in English at

http://www.dvcn.org/Documents/ManualHIVVAWEN.pdf

Available in Spanish at http://www.dvcn.org/Documents/ManualVIHVCMSP.pdf

Also available for free download is the Multiple Faces of the Intersections Between HIV and VAW published by DVCN, UNIFEM, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and others.

Call for Proposals: UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women

The United Nations Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence against Women ("The UN Trust Fund") is a leading global multi-lateral mechanism supporting national efforts to end one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. Established in 1996, the UN Trust Fund (which is administered by UNIFEM) has contributed to breaking the once nearly universal silence on violence against women through grants to

·         Increase awareness

·         Advocate for passage and implementation of laws grounded in human rights standards

·         Promote access to services

·         Develop sustainable capacities for continued progress

The UN Trust Fund is now soliciting proposals for its 14th grant cycle (2009). For information, go to http://cambodiajobs.blogspot.com/2009/04/call-for-proposals-un-trust-fund-to-end.html

A Book about Life in the Middle East

An unassuming Australian woman, Jean Calder has led an extraordinary life, bringing hope and joy to people living in some of the most dangerous areas of the Middle East. Jean's work with young children with disabilities took her into Palestinian refugee camps where she worked tirelessly under extreme conditions. In 1982 when a civil war broke out and most foreigners fled Lebanon, Jean stayed and cared for children with disabilities under a bombed-out hospital staircase.

Jean now lives and works in the Gaza Strip, where she has built up an internationally admired rehabilitation program which is making a profound difference to many people's lives, especially young children with disabilities. Her book titled Where the Road Leads documents some of these struggles. It is available at

Regional Training Opportunities

Handicap International (HI), the Arab Organization of Disabled People (AODP), the European Disability Forum (EDF), and many other partners are launching several initiatives in the Middle East supporting disability activists and service providers. These initiatives will support stakeholders to advocate for the development and implementation of policies that ensure greater access of persons with disabilities to social services. One of the main activities for this year is the training of 25 trainers/experts composed of persons with disabilities, service providers and public authorities. The core of the training should allow participants to develop "the global picture" in which policies affecting persons with disabilities are defined and developed. For more information on this initiative, please email <regionaltraining@hi-me.org >

"Introducing 'International NGO Journal (INGOJ)'"

Dear Colleague,

International NGO Journal (INGOJ) publishes high-quality solicited and unsolicited articles, in English, in all areas of Non Governmental Organization (NGO) activities. INGOJ is founded to publish proposals, appraisals and reports of NGO projects. The aim is to have centralized information for NGO activities where stakeholders including beneficiaries of NGO services can find useful information about ongoing projects and where to obtain particular assistance. Also prospective donors will easily find information about different NGOs and decide which to fund on specific projects.

Our objective is to inform authors of the decision on their manuscript(s) within four weeks of submission. Following acceptance, a paper will normally be published in the next issue.

Instruction for authors and other details are available on our website www.academicjournals.org/INGOJ. Prospective authors should send their manuscript(s) to ngo@academicjournals.org

Open Access
One key request of researchers across the world is unrestricted access to research publications. INGOJ is fully committed Open Access Initiative by providing free access to all articles (both abstract and full PDF text) as soon as they are published. We ask you to support this initiative by publishing your papers in this journal.

Publication Alert
We will be glad to send you a publication alert showing the table of content with link to the various abstracts and full PDF text of articles published in each issue. Kindly send us an email if you will like to receive publication alert.

Best regards,
